Why choose CMOS technology for car camera?


Since car cameras are so important, what are the requirements for technology and craftsmanship? For in-vehicle applications, car cameras are the same as mobile phone cameras. They mainly use CMOS instead of CCD as optical sensors. There are three main reasons for this:


First of all, the primary characteristic of sensors used in active driving assistance systems is: fast. Especially in high-speed driving situations, the system must be able to record key driving conditions, evaluate such conditions and initiate corresponding measures in real time. Essentially, CMOS is a faster image acquisition technology-the unit in a CMOS sensor is usually actively controlled and read out by three transistors, which significantly accelerates the image acquisition process. At present, high-performance CMOS-based cameras can reach a level of about 5,000 frames per second.


Secondly, CMOS sensors also have advantages in digital image processing. CCD sensors usually provide analog TSC/PAL signals, which may have to be converted by an additional AD converter, or the CCD sensor must work with a progressive scan method with digital image output. Either way, allowing a CCD camera to provide digital image signals significantly increases the complexity of the system; while CMOS sensors can directly provide LVDS or digital output signals, and the components in the active driving assistance system can be directly and without delay Process these signals.


Moreover, in order to achieve this goal, car camera manufacturers must consider the use of lower cost CMOS sensors. In addition, when strong light enters, the CMOS sensor will not generate the smear noise that occurs when using CCD. This will reduce the adjustment time caused by operating errors.
